EK Skyrunning Montenegro: raceverslag

De Klim-en-Bergsportfederatie stuurde 5 atleten naar Montenegro om deel te nemen aan het Europees Kampioenschap Skyrunning. Charlotte Cotton, Laura Van Vooren, Florian Descamps, Wannes Lybaert en Jasper Mannaert mochten de Belgische driekleur verdedigen.

Het avontuur startte donderdagavond op de luchthaven van Charleroi. Laura werd tegengehouden door een geblokkeerde identiteitskaart. Flexibiliteit kennen ze blijkbaar niet op de luchthaven, wij moesten de vlieger op en Laura mocht niet mee.. Terug thuis ging ze naar de lokale politie, daar kreeg ze te horen dat er niets mis was met haar identiteitskaart. Na twee slapeloze nachten, uren telefoneren, veel geregel en een spoedprocedure voor een nieuwe identiteitskaart geraakte Laura toch nog op een vlieger naar Montenegro. Dergelijke stress en slaaptekort is dramatisch in voorbereiding van een wedstrijd, maar Laura kon alsnog deelnemen aan de Sky wedstrijd op zondag, de ultra afstand op zaterdag had ze wel gemist.

Het wedstrijdweekend zelf startte op vrijdag met de verticale kilometer. Op een technisch moeilijk parcours van 4.3km worden 1000 hoogtemeters overwonnen, de laatste meters zelfs in de sneeuw! Charlotte kwam in actie bij de vrouwen en werd knap 19de na een moeilijke wedstrijd. Wannes werd in de mannenrace 39ste.. Na een scheur in het enkelligament was zijn voorbereiding allesbehalve ideaal.

Zaterdag kwam Florian in actie voor de ultra wedstrijd, 50 kilometer met 4400 hoogtemeters. Een zeer technisch parcours met steile klimmen en afdalingen, daarbovenop werd het 35°C. Flo liep enorm sterk tussen de wereldtoppers en werd maar liefst 5de!

Zondag: Skyrace! 30km met bijna 2400hm. Zeer blij dat Laura het team kon vervoegen en starten in de skyrace. Ondanks de tegenslag op de luchthaven is Laura als een machine tekeer gegaan. Met een brede glimlach kwam ze als 11de over de meet! Enorm knappe prestatie! Wannes en Jasper werden in de mannenwedstrijd respectievelijk 35ste en 21ste.

It was a great honour to run for the KBF Skyrunning team at the European Skyrunning championships, in stunning, wild and rugged Montenegro.
My race was the vertical km. After a very flat and fast and furious 800m start, we reached a very narrow single track, and a highly technical ascent of 2.5km with 950m. The course was absolutely spectacular, finishing with a climb in the snow and beautiful views over the peaks and the valley.
Unfortunately after getting blocked at the start, I started the single track too far behind, which was almost impossible to make up, which resulted in my 19th place. Definitely not my best result however every experience brings many lessons.
I look forward to more races with my friendly and talented team mates. Go team Belgium!

Wannes Lybaert

My first time at a championship Skyrunning and also my first time being in the Balkan. What an amazing time we had as a team. We experienced highs and lows from the start, and managed to act as a true supportive team the whole while. There was no room for fatigue as we all helped each other and acted with selfless energy. Our Formula One checkpoint pitstops, with immaculate execution, during which we provided assistance for each other in the race, have become legendary. Our Belgian flag waved majestically through the Montenegrin streets as Florian took the fifth place in the Ultra. High on top of a snow field, Charlotte kept on encouraging other athletes after her Vertical Kilometer race. Jasper, our team leader, made sure everything kept running smoothly. Laura kept pushing on in the Sky Race after not being able to start her favorite distance, ending just south of the top ten. We are ready for the next show, let it come !

European Championship Skyrunning Ultra: 5th place! Definitely the most difficult race ever, the technicity and the heat! Cruel!
Big thanks to Klim- en Bergsportfederatie to make this possible to participate with a Belgium team and to Wannes, Jasper and the Dutch team (NKBV) for the amazing support, I love you all.
Unfortunately not the perfect day cause Laura Van Vooren hasn't had the chance to participate. She was stuck at the airport, falsely because her ID card was in the end not blocked.

So happy to be part of this team! After two horrible days and sleepless nights, I managed to join the team Saturday evening. Too late to support and encourage Wannes and Charlotte during their VK and too late for my own race, the ultra distance. As disappointed as I was to miss this, as happy and proud was I to see Florian run a perfect race, finishing 5th.
On Sunday, Jasper, Wannes and I did the sky race. I gave it all, but when the tank is already quite empty, there's just not much left to give. And I have to admit, I don't have the speed in the legs for this kind of short races. It was a great opportunity to learn to push and fight in difficult circumstances. When I crossed the finish line in 11th position, I felt surprisingly fresh and at the same time very aware that I couldn't have run any faster.
Grateful for a very special and unique weekend. Every member of our team made it unforgettable. We all overcame our own issues, ranging from injuries and downhill struggles to logistics and were at our best possible.

Enorm blij en trots dat ik België mocht afvaardigen op het Europees Kampioenschap!

Ik startte snel en de benen voelden goed in de eerste klim. De technisch moeilijke afdaling bracht me in problemen. Ik vond geen ritme, maakte wat fouten en ging zonder vertrouwen naar beneden, de ene na de andere renner vloog me voorbij! Een gebrek aan specifiek training uiteraard. Ook het tweede deel van de wedstrijd verliep niet van een leien dakje. De hitte speelde wat op de maag en ik kreeg amper nog iets binnen, gelukkig kon ik nog blijven lopen. Ik verloor een spurtje voor de 20ste plaats en werd dus 21ste.
Enorm genoten van de mooie omgeving en zeer veel plezier gemaakt met de prachtige Belgische delegatie!
